Build

Over the last few years, we’ve been getting a lot of feedback about our bike model lineup from our customers. Some wanted a flat-bar expedition bike like the Prospector, but built around modern standards like boost thru axles and optimized for a wider range of drivetrains. Others loved the Stargazer but preferred riding with flat bars over drop bars.

The result is Tumbleweed’s newest model, the Sunliner, a fully rigid mountain touring bike built with the same ultra high-end oversized chromoly steel tubeset and construction as the award-winning Stargazer, but with the longer reach from the Prospector, optimized for flat bars. It’s capable and comfortable, ready for unloaded trail riding with friends or an extended expedition to the most remote corners of the globe.

Standout specs:

  • Up to 29x3” tire clearance
  • Boost axle spacing
  • Oversized, multi-butted and heat-treated chromoly steel tubing for maximum toughness and resilience
  • Rack and fender mounts, triple bottle mounts on the fork and downtube
  • Rigid specific upright geometry to maximize frame bag volume
  • Flat or swept-back handlebars

The Sunliner features the same geometry and generous tire clearance as the Prospector, with the same rigid-specific touring bike design as the Stargazer, for simplicity and reliability on the trail. It offers fun, adventure-ready performance that makes you want to take the long way home.

The Sunliner’s non-suspension corrected fork design creates a huge front triangle and allows for maximum framebag space as well as easy fender mounting. The Sunliner can fit up to a 29x3.0" tire and has all of the mounting points for racks, fenders, and gear that you would expect for a bike designed from the ground up for off-road touring.

We've been riding our Sunliners in all sorts of configurations, drivetrains, bag and rack setups, loaded and unloaded. It's a very easy bike to recommend to anyone interested in a versatile and capable all-around bikepacking rig.

The Sunliner is built for:

  • Riders who want to take on any trail and ride, loaded or unloaded
  • Riders who want flat-bar control for off-road touring

Can I put a drop bar on a Sunliner?

The Sunliner is optimized for a flat bar. We do not recommend putting bars onto our frames that do not account for the frame geometry, which in each case is optimized for a specific type of bar. If you prefer a drop bar, we recommend our Stargazer model.

What is the complete bike purchase process?

We build complete bikes in the order that the build specs are finalized. Our standard build with the parts list as shown is $3,975 USD. We use this as a starting point for your build, and since we custom assemble each bike from the frame up, including hand-building all of our wheels, there is a wide range of changes you can make to our standard spec.

Once you place your order, we put your name on the frame/fork and reach out to start confirming the final spec for your bike. Once we have finalized the build spec, we send over an invoice for the final balance due if there are any upgrades from the standard spec.

Once the final invoice is paid, your build sheet goes into our build queue, and we begin ordering any necessary parts for your bike. Our goal is to have your bike completed and ready to ship within 4-6 weeks from the time you pay your final invoice. However, there can sometimes be unforeseen delays if a component is out of stock from the manufacturer, etc.

We build your wheels, completely assemble your bike, test ride it multiple times, and double-check all adjustments before packing it for shipment. When you receive your bike, we recommend taking it to a professional mechanic for reassembly. It will be very straightforward for a shop to assemble.
